What is the best way to trim a cockatiel’s beak?

I noticed lately that my cockatiel's beak needs to be trimmed. He's having a hard time eating. Is it going to be painful for the bird if I trim his beak?

This is a sure sign of fatty liver disease. Also a sign of a high fat seed diet. Birds liver can not digest a high fat diet so it pushes it off into the body cavity and causes over growth of the beak and nails. By the time birds start showing signs of this disease, the liver is about shut down, and the other organs start to take over. Some times, but not always, it can be reversible. Hence why you have the over growth of the beak.
I stress the importance of the diet in many of my posts. This bird needs to see a vet for the beak trimming to be done professionally, along with a total diet change and maybe the disease can be reversed. But the time to act on it is ASAP.
Fatty liver disease is often fatal.
Good Luck!
