Dogs are great companions and come in all shapes, sizes and breeds. These animals can live very long lives, sometimes up to 20 years! What makes it possible for a pet to live this long? The dog breed has a good deal to do with lifespan but adequate health care is the first step to a long and happy dog life. There are several things you should do for your pet’s good health.

Vaccinations

All dogs are susceptible to various diseases such as parvovirus, heartworms, distemper and rabies just to name a few. This is why it is very important to get your dog on a regular schedule of vaccinations. The first shots are usually given at 6 weeks of age and continue routinely over the following 16 weeks. After the initial round of vaccinations, your dog should only need a yearly booster to keep them protected.

Know Breed Specifics

If you have a purebred dog, you should know what diseases are specific to the breed. Some breeds are more prone to hip dysplasia, cleft pallet, blindness, deafness and trick knees and you will want to know the specifics for your dog so that you can watch for early warning signs. You can best protect yourself from dogs with potential health problems by being very careful when you purchase the animal. Check the reputation of the breeder and watch for signs that the dogs are poorly cared for.

Observation

You are your dog’s first line of defense when it comes to their health. Since they cannot communicate verbally that, they are not feeling well you will have to know what to watch for. With most breeds of dogs, the skin will tell you a good deal about their health. Healthy skin should be soft, smooth and free of scabs or growths. Watch for rashes, bites and scaling of the skin, which are indicators that something is definitely wrong.

The nose is another good indicator of your dogs overall health, it should be cool and moist most of the time with little or no drainage. Any discharge from the nose should be clear and not thick, yellow or foul smelling. While a warm, dry nose is not a definite sign your dog is sick, it is a good reason to watch their behavior for other indicators.

Call the Vet

Some situations call for immediate veterinarian care. If your dog is suddenly unsteady on their feet, vomiting a lot, shivering, constipated or lethargic you should make an immediate call to the vet. Poison and even some illnesses can take a dog’s life quickly so you want to be proactive in seeking medical attention.

Food

What type of food you should feed your dog is a hotly debated topic in some arenas. There are those who believe a raw diet is the best and veterinarians who will swear by one brand of dog food over another. The best choice is probably somewhere in the middle of all the controversy. Look at the ingredients on the label and choose what you and your vet feel is the best combination for your particular dog breed. Be very conscious of potential pet food recalls and act accordingly.

Many people like to feed their dog’s table scraps, which for the most part will not hurt. However, there are two things you should never give a dog, chicken bones and chocolate. The bones can splinter into dangerous slivers while your dog is chewing and chocolate can be fatal even in small amounts.

It is said that the Welsh Pembroke Corgi was introduced to Wales by Flemish weavers. However, like many breeds of dogs it’s exact beginnings is unknown. What is known about this beautiful little dog is that it is a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II.

Description

The Pembroke Corgi is a small herding dog that stands 10 to 12 inches high and generally weighs about 28 pounds. It has extremely short legs and a long body. It’s face is fox like having a wide skull that narrows to a pointed muzzle with pointed ears that stand upright.

The Pembroke’s eyes are oval and various shades of brown. It has oval feet and a short tail either through breeding or docking. It has a thick weather resistant under coat and a longer coarser overcoat. The coat colors are sable, red, fawn, and black and tan. Many Pembroke’s have white under their throat and down their chest.

History

Pembroke Corgi has been used for centuries as herding dogs. Due to their small stature they do not herd like larger dogs by surrounding a herd, they herd by nipping at the heels and driving the animal in the direction it wants it to go. They have been used to herd cattle and sheep and as family pets.

Personality

Pembroke Corgis are highly intelligent dogs, they are alert, loyal, fun loving, confident, and even tempered. These are very energetic dogs that can work all day and then come home to play with the children in the family.

Because they are such fun loving and even tempered dogs they make wonderful family pets and are exceptionally good with children. They can be very affectionate and loving and consider their humans to be a part of their family.

They also make excellent guard dogs and will warn the family of approaching strangers and other things they deem as a threat by barking.

Special Training Needs

A Pembroke Corgi will try and herd people by nipping at their heels. This is undesirable behavior in a family pet and should be discouraged in young puppies. You can do this by firmly establishing that the humans in the household are in control.

You will also need to socialize your Corgi well in order for them to bark less. A Pembroke that is not well socialized will see anything unfamiliar as a threat and this can lead to incessant barking. Socializing them young can help prevent this problem.

Grooming

During heavy shedding times the Pembroke needs daily brushing and brushing at least once a week at all other times. He needs his nails clipped regularly and his teeth maintained as well as regular veterinary check ups.

Exercise

This dog breed needs both physical and mental exercise. Long walks, training and plenty of attention will keep this dog healthy and happy.

Diseases

One of the healthiest breeds of all the herding dogs Pembroke Corgis none the less are prone to certain diseases and illnesses such as invertebral disc disease, hip dysplasia, and Epilepsy.

Pembroke Corgis are wonderful little dogs that make excellent pets with proper training. With proper care your Corgi can live 12 to 15 years.

Leashes and collars span the entire spectrum of design and glitz factors. They are made in fabrics, leather, and chain. Size of the leash depends on the size of the dog you are controlling. A leash that is too light will not hold a Great Dane, but may do well with your Yorkie. Attaching the correct leash to the collar is one of the single most important actions you can take when walking your dog.

There are leashes of different sizes and styles. One is sure to suit your needs.

A basic leash is usually 6 feet long and can be made of any material. These leashes are versatile and easy to find. In an emergency your can use it as a muzzle or collar when it is used as a slip lead.

Bungee leashes stretch. They either have an elastic section or may be made entirely of rubber. Although you may feel this is a good help for dogs that pull on a leash, teaching your dog to walk on a leash is a much more valuable lesson.

Retractable leashes. These leashes consist of a thin cord which is wound onto a spring-loaded wheel, enclosed in a handle. As your dog walks away, the cord comes out and returns to the handle when he returns. Although these leashes may be convenient, there are hazards connected to them.

The control you have over your dog is minimal. They can stretch to the limit and run into traffic, pull on the leash and assume a potentially aggressive posture towards other dogs or it allows them to be less than polite when meeting people or other animals by allowing them to jump on them.

Injury can also occur to you or your dog if the line snaps when fully extended. A sudden lunge by your pet can cause this to happen causing the line to snap in either direction and causing injury.

Training leashes. These leashes come in sizes from 10 to 60 feet. It is used for training your dog. You will have control over him even though you are a long distance away. This is beneficial for teaching the “come” command. These are not designed to use as tethers in your yard or to be used on busy roadways. Dogs should not be tethered in your yard and an open field or your yard is safer than passing traffic.

Slip leads are available but potentially dangerous to your dog. They should not be used on a regular basis. Instead of a clip on the end, there is a ring to slip the leash through. You have little control over the tightness of the leash. This has the danger of strangling your dog or damaging their trachea, wind pipe or neck. These should be used only when a regular collar and leash are not available.

Your dog’s collar should fit properly. It should be loose enough to fit two fingers. Keeping your dog safe and others happy can be accomplished simply by using a leash.

People talk, dogs bark. It is their way of communicating. If they need to go out, come in, see people or other dogs in your yard, they will probably bark. A knock on the door can set them off into a melee of noise. That’s not bad if it’s a burglar at your door, but can be unnerving to the child next door or your friends.

Dogs will bark out of boredom which usually stems from confinement. If they are in a crate all day or confined to a particular area of your house they may let you know they aren’t happy. They are asking for attention and you are the one to provide it.

If a dog is afraid of something, chances are they will bark. It doesn’t matter if it is people, other dogs, thunder, loud noises or other animals.

Protecting their own turf is instinctive. If he appears territorial with ears up and forward and tail held high , you may want to deal with that.

As dogs age health issues can also be the cause. Older dogs who are deaf, cannot hear themselves bark. Your dog may have senile dementia. Your veterinarian can help with medications for dementia but not deafness. A deaf dog can be taught the quiet command with hand gestures or other method such as a flash light. This must be taught to them.

If you have more than one dog, each should be trained individually. This prevents roars when the doorbell rings.

Training your dog to stop barking is a challenge, but it can be done. First of all, don’t bark back. Yelling at them is your form of barking. To be successful with your attempts there are a few methods you can use.

• Ignore the barking. Leave them alone, no contact, conversation or attention until they quit. Once they are quiet give them a treat as a reward.

• Gradually a dog can get used to whatever is causing him to bark. First have the item they bark out far away that they don’t bark when they see it. Gradually move the item closer a few feet at a time. Every time the dog does not bark, give a treat. Take your time and be patient.

Teaching the quiet command requires a unique method to say the least. First teach your dog to “speak.” Have someone make a noise that usually makes your dog bark. Allow him to bark several times, then put a treat in front of his nose. When he stops to smell the treat, praise him before you give it to him. Once your dog can bark on command, it is time to teach “quiet.” First tell him to speak. When he starts barking, tell him quiet and present a treat. Once he is quiet, praise him and give him the treat.

You can also teach your dog to do something specific to stop the barking such as going to his crate when the doorbell rings. If he goes to his place on command it is treat time.

Make sure your dog gets enough exercise and has enough mental stimulation to get him tired. Tired is good and makes him less likely to bark.

Puppies are so cute and cuddly that you just cannot wait to take them home. That is until you make a midnight trip to the refrigerator and find the present Fido left on the hall rug. Potty training a puppy is probably the most frustrating part of owning a dog. People have been known to surrender their pets to shelters because they could not fix this problem. The good news is there are some tried and true methods for potty training a puppy.

Consistency is Key

The first place many new dog owners miss the mark is in consistency. You are going to have to address this issue head on and in the same manner every time. Potty training a puppy is much like potty training children in that you want to catch the situation early. For instance after your puppy gets a drink or eats there is a better than average chance they will need to eliminate. So after feeding it is a good idea to take them outside for a few moments. Ask them if they need to potty, or whatever word you feel comfortable with, and then make that the verbal cue. In other words, do not ask if they need to potty today and change the word to tinkle tomorrow. Be consistent in your words and actions.

Cleaning Helps

If you have other pets or your new puppy has had accidents, chances are they are in the same general area. This is because dogs will sniff out an appropriate place to relieve themselves. Clean the area very thoroughly once they have had an accident or if you have other pets who have used the spot before. You may need to purchase a special odor eliminator, but the cost is well worth it.

Leash

Often times catching your precious bundle of fur in the act is a chore, particularly if you have a large home. A good way to combat this problem is by placing them on a leash and keeping them by your side all day. The moment you see signs that they need to potty you can quickly head for the door, all the while using the word you have chosen as a verbal cue.

Crate Training

Many people have had huge success with crate training. With this technique, you set up a crate with just enough room for them to lie down. Since a dog generally will not go to the bathroom where they sleep this teaches them to hold it if you will. The thing you have to remember is you are going to have to be very hands on with this approach. You should take them out of the crate every morning for a potty break and periodically for the rest of the day. If you work all day long this is not the best answer for your potty training issues. Should you decide to try crate training you will want to research the process thoroughly.

Puppy Pads

Finally, for some people taking their puppy outdoors is not really an option. They may work too much or simply do not have the yard for outside training. Thankfully, pet product manufacturers have come up with handy puppy pads. These are somewhat like a litter box for your dog, without messy litter. Many people use these to train their dog inside and then gradually move the tray outdoors. Either way they are a great invention that makes potty training a puppy much easier.

It’s so important to have a dog that’s well behaved. For anyone who has just bought their first puppy or even if they adopted an older dog, there are certain dog obedience tips they must enforce. It’s not about being mean or cruel to a dog, it’s about teaching them how to act appropriately so they are house-trained and act proper in public places. In fact, if you just want to teach your dog the basics there are a few dog obedience tips that are going to be enough for you.

Good socialization is one of the best dog obedience tips.

One of the most important aspects of dog obedience training is to socialize the dog properly. One of the dog obedience tips is to help socialize the dog properly, which can be done best by getting them around large groups of people and animals to show them that they need to be friendly and well behaved in situations like this. No dog should be kept in home all the time, and rather they need to be outside and get taken for walks to socialize with other people and dogs. To socialize your dog properly, make sure that you bring them out to the largest variety of social events as possible.

Other dog obedience tips for socialization are to expose the dog to a variety of situations to properly socialize them. But socialization activities for the dog should be fun and pressure free, so take them for a jog in the park or to a carnival to walk around and see all the happy faces.

The most important dog obedience tips are about sitting

Every dog should at least know how to sit, and fortunately this is one of the easiest dog obedience tips to teach a dog. While there are certainly more interesting tricks a dog could learn, this is one of the most basic and most important by far.

Find a quiet location where the dog will be able to focus, and you can either use treats or any other form of positive reinforcement which will be rewarded to the dog after they listen and comply to your order. Each time you see that the dog is going to sit on its own you want to tell them to sit. When he does you praise him like a mad person. You may also want to use treats or just a nice pat on the head. This must be done immediately after the dog has sat down, so they know what you are rewarding them for.

Positive dog obedience tips

The most important thing is to make sure that you have some sort of positive reinforcement you are going to be able to use here. Remember, it can be a bit of a challenge especially with the older dogs but using dog obedience tips will be more than worth it in the end. You don’t want to own a dog that you are constantly going to have to be yelling at and disciplining. Training your dog with dog obedience tips will give you a well-socialized and house-trained dog that will be enjoyable and pleasant to be around.

Reducing your allergies can be a horrible ordeal to go through, though it is worth it when someone you love is in love with a four legged, allergy triggering, fur ball! Or worse if you’re in love with it! Which I’m completely guilty of.

Though there is relief, and it is easier then you might think. I know from personal experience what is like to have to endure allergies from our furry little friends. I suffer from Asthma and was rushed to the ER when we brought our kitten home. My doctor advised me to get rid of him immediately. But I couldn’t. My daughter fell in love with him and I was afraid of what might happen to him if I did send him a way. So I surfed the web to find anything that could help me. Needless to say I was shocked to see how many sites suggested to get rid of the kitten or how many of them told me to buy all this equipment.

Well, I not only found an easier way, but an effective way to keep your cat and to save yourself from undergoing anymore allergic reactions. Some simple steps to start with are;

•Bathe the cat as soon as you get him/her. If they are kittens this will not be so bad. But if they are adults and not declawed don’t fret there are wipes you can use. This way you don’t have to submerge them. They come with calming chamomile fragrance. It seems to help my cat. Bathe them twice a week for starters. (You will notice when you won’t have to bathe them so often).

•Keep your house clean. Sounds obvious right? Though you will be surprised what you might not think about cleaning. Like your countertops. Wipe them down with disinfecting wipes every time you prepare food. (cat hair doesn’t go well with any meal) Wipe around their food and water dishes. This will eliminate the saliva which many people are allergic to. Also wash your bed sheets as often as possible although you might not allow the cat in your room hair can still transfer on to the bed.

•Limit them certain areas of the home. As I mentioned earlier keeping them out of your bedroom. Also keep your fresh linens in a room you will keep your cat out of, this includes towels and washcloths.

•And one last simple step. Change your cats litter to pine! Trust me this helps more then you might think! Take into consideration that when you’re cleaning the clay litter the dust that is lifting into the air has cat urine in it, even though it is clumped up it was still mixed in with the lifting fumes, which you are breathing. Gross when you stop and think about it. Pine there is no fumes; it absorbs into the pine and breaks up.

These simple steps will really help and you didn’t have to buy anything that cost more than ten dollars. Try these four basic steps with the aid of some over the counter allergy meds and you will notice a huge difference.

These are some of the easiest and cheaper ways to reduce your allergies. Visit my site at www.reducingcatallergies.com to learn more.
